Monroe is a city located along the east side of the Ouachita River. It is the 8th largest city in Louisiana and the parish seat of Ouachita Parish. Monroe, previously a settlement known as Fort Miro, which adopted the name Monroe in May 1819 in recognition of the steam-powered paddle-wheeler James Monroe. Monroe, and its neighboring city on the west side of the river, West Monroe, are often referred to as the Twin Cities. Mayor Jamie Mayo has served the city in various capacities since 1995, and served as mayor since 2001. Monroe is supported by two school districts – Ouachita Parish school district and Monroe City School district.
